CBSE to affiliate 5 Delhi schools with its international board

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will affiliate five schools in India with its ‘international board’. As many as 20 schools functioning in foreign countries are already affiliated with the CBSE International Board. Harmeet Kaur Waraich, principal of Nankana Sahib Public School, Ludhiana, said this after returning to the city from Bangalore, where she attended the 17th annual conference of CBSE Sahodaya School Complexes on December 20 and 21.

Waraich said: “This declaration was made by CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi and Head (Innovative and Research), CBSE, Dr Sahdna Parashar. After already affiliating 20 schools in foreign countries in the session 2010-2011, it now plans to include five schools of Delhi from the coming academic session on an experimental basis. If the feedback is satisfactory, more schools will be affiliated to the CBSEIB.”

The conference was attended by nearly 500 CBSE school principals from across the country, with five of them from Ludhiana.

Pramjit Kaur, principal of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, who also attended the conference, said: “Many key issues such as school-based assessments, addressing resistance to change, teacher empowerment, supporting teachers in implementing continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE), embedding technology in CCE environment, strengthening formative learning, responding to diversity through CCE, dimensions of co-scholastic skills and life skills education, were discussed.”

Waraich said: “It was also decided to start an online filing of CCE card from January 15 for Class IX and X.”

Should be given proper attention to offer additional subject in CBSE schools...

As you are aware that as per scheme of studies, a candidate is required to offer the following subjects at secondary School Examination (Class X) :

    (1) and (2) Two languages out of –

    “Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Marathi, Malayalam, Manipuri, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Lepcha, Limbu, Bhutia, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Nepali, Tibetan and Mizo.

    (3) Mathematics
    (4) Science
    (5) Social Science
    (6) Work Education or Pre‐Vocational Education
    (7) Art Education
    (8) Physical and Health Education

NOTE :     Hindi and English must be one of the two languages to be studied in Class IX and X. Hindi and English can also be offered simultaneously. In Hindi and English, two courses have been provided for Class IX and X keeping in view the varying background of the student. A student may either opt Communicative‐English (subject code 101) or English Language and Literature (Subject Code 184). Similarly, in Hindi, a student may either opt for Hindi A (Code 085) or Hindi B (002).

02.     Students may also offer any one of the following as an additional subject :

Language other than the two compulsory languages (offered as subjects of study)

OR

Commerce, Painting, Music, Home Science or Foundation of Information Technology

03.     It has been observed that a number of schools allow their candidates to offer an additional subject and the same is entered against their names in the List of Candidates.However, it is understood, in a number of cases, the students are not taught the above subjects in the schools. This practice is against the norms of the Board. A school can offer only those subjects for which the school is having necessary infrastructure i.e. a qualified teacher and other facilities like laboratory etc and the candidate must be taught complete course of each subject including the additional subject.

04.     I am writing to impress upon all Heads of Schools to ensure that candidates may be allowed to offer an additional (sixth) subject only if the school has necessary facilities such as a qualified teacher and laboratories etc. and the additional (sixth) subject must be given proper attention by the schools in case the students have been permitted to offer the subject in classes IX and X.

Combined Medical and Engineering entrance examination for CBSE students

Single Entrance Exam for Medical and Engineering

There is a proposal with CBSE to integrate the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Examination which is conducted for the 15% merit positions for the Medical/Dental Colleges of India, and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination which is being conducted for various Engineering and Architecture Institutions including National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology) (IITs, IIITM & IIITDM), self-financed deemed Universities/Universities/other Central Government/State Government funded institutions, State/UT Institutions.

The candidates seeking admission to different courses would be spared the bother of appearing in multiple entrance examinations. The time by which the combined entrance examination is to be introduced depends on the consent from other stakeholders including Directorate General of Health Services and Medical Council of India.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) - Education Reform by Min.of Human Resource Development

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in consultation with the Ministry of Human Resource Development and keeping in view the spirit of National Policy of Education, 1986 has decided to introduce the following education reforms:-

i) There will be no class X Board examination w.e.f. 2011 for students studying CBSE’s Senior Secondary Schools and who do not wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class X. The students studying in CBSE’s Secondary Schools will, however, be required to appear in Board’s external examination because they will be leaving the Secondary School after Class X.

ii) The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation has been strengthened in all CBSE affiliated schools w.e.f. October, 2009 in Class IX.

iii) The new Grading System has been introduced at Secondary School Level (for Class IX and X) effective from 2009-10 academic session.

The Right of Children to Free & Compulsory Education Act 2009 has been enacted, which envisages significant reforms in the Elementary Education sector especially with reference to admission, attendance and completion of elementary education by all children in schools which conform to specified norms and standards.

Appropriate policy reforms in the higher education sector have also been undertaken, Section 6 of the Central Universities Act, 2009 provides for academic reforms in newly established Central Universities. The reforms are being extended to other Central Educational Institutions also.

Grading system in exams criticised by educationists

Presiding over a symposium organised by Educational Forum, educationist and author, Prem Shankar Khare criticised the policy decision of Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) and National Council of Educational Research and Training(NCERT) of introducing grading system in examinations and making the high school board examination optional.

He urged the UP Board authorities not to follow the measures suggested by CBSE and refuted the arguments that these changes would check the suicidal cases among students on failing or getting less then expected marks in examination.

Prominent Urdu writer Dr F K Siddiqui said, "Teachers are now being paid handsome salaries by the government and now it is their turn to repay their debts to the society by providing quality education."

Kusum Lata Khare said that teachers are certainly at the centre of all educational reforms but the government and state leaders are more worried about their political games and popularity.

Educationists welcome grading system in CBSE exams

Noted educationists today welcomed the government's decision to introduce grading systems this year and make CBSE exams for Class X optional from next year.

Terming the decision as "marvellous", Amita Wattal, principal of Springdales school here said, "I think it is a wonderful news, something that we have been waiting for a very long time. It will relieve the children from the burden of these extremely violent examinations. The continuous comprehensive evaluation will ensure that the child is groomed from a very young age."

"We have got mixed reactions as far as the students are concerned but they all are very happy that the current system is being replaced by a more authentic system of evaluation," added Lata Vaidyanathan, principal of Modern School.

Career counsellor and noted educationists Usha Albuquerque said the move was "ideal" in the given circumstances.

Vice President to give away prizes of the 21st National Youth Parliament Competition for Kendriya Vidyalayas

Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari, the Vice President of India will be the Chief Guest at the Prize Distribution Function of the 21st National Youth Parliament Competition, 2008-2009 for Kendriya Vidyalayas being held tomorrow in New Delhi and will give away the prizes to the winners of the Competition.

The students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, CLRI, Chennai, which stood first in the competition, will present a short sitting of “Youth Parliament” on the occasion.The Vidyalayas and students who secured positions in the competitions will be awarded, shields, trophies and certificates during the Prize Distribution Function.

The Running Parliamentary Shield and Trophy for standing first at National Level will be awarded to Kendriya Vidyalaya, CLRI, Chennai. Besides, trophies will also be awarded to 5 Vidyalayas which stood first in their respective zones and 12 Vidyalayas which stood first in their respective regions. Under the scheme of Youth Parliament, 21st National Youth Parliament Competition for Kendriya Vidyalayas in the series was organized during 2008-2009 with 90 schools participating.

The competition was held in two stages, first at the regional level and then at the national level. The position of regional winner was determined on the basis of evaluation of performance for the national level. The Vidyalayas, which stood first in their respective regions, then competed at the national level.

Teams of judges which inter-alia included MPs/Ex-MPs alongwith officers of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan evaluated the presentations. On the basis of the evaluation, Kendriya Vidyalaya, CLRI, Chennai was declared winner at the National Level.

Youth Parliament Competition was started by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in the schools under the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi and NDMC in1966. In 1978, Kendriya Vidyalayas situated in and around Delhi were included in the competition alongwith the Delhi schools.

In 1988, a separate National Youth Parliament Scheme for Kendriya Vidyalayas was introduced as a part of the celebrations of 40 years of India’s Independence and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth centenary. In 1997-98, two more national competitions, one for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and the other for Universities and Colleges were introduced as a part of the celebrations to commemorate 50 years of India’s Independence. The Youth Parliament Scheme aims at inculcating the spirit of self-discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, righteous expression of views and other virtues of democratic way of life in the younger generation. Besides the scheme also acquaints the students with the practices and procedures of Parliament, techniques of discussion and debate and develops in them the quality of leadership.
